10 June 2022 – Edition 19

Happy birthday to the following children who have their special days in the next month!

There are no birthdays this week!

Nothing from April 24, 2024 to May 24, 2024.

Dearest BOFS Parents,

I trust you are all well. I am sure you are also looking forward to the change in routine with the Winter school holidays commencing in two weeks’ time on the 24th of June.

With the annual commemoration of Youth Day on Thursday 16th June, we as Educators are all trying to enhance and ensure the safety of our very precious children. Unfortunately, we no longer live in a world that is safe for all. It can be difficult to find ways to speak with children about safety. As parents and educators, it is our responsibility to teach young children about safety and allow them to take safe risks. As younger children develop their risk perception, adult supervision is key because they are unaware of how dangerous or unsafe a situation might be. However, taking risks is not always a bad thing. In fact, it is considered an essential part of growing up by Child Psychologists. By taking risks, your child’s risk perception will be trained and developed to determine risky and unsafe behaviours.

One of the first steps is to ensure that you are prepared and knowledgeable about the issue. Identifying situations when children feel safe, happy, and content are great conversation starters. These can be used to initiate conversations and create an understanding about when the child does not feel that way, and to reinforce that there are times that they should share their thoughts, feelings, or concerns with you. At school, we have found that the use of fun, interactive and practical activities where the children are actually involved, rather than a long explanation from us is most beneficial. Through participation, children learn to be aware of potentially dangerous things, situations, and hazards to avoid and gain a healthy respect for safety precautions. Try to demonstrate safe behaviours as much as possible. Most children will copy your actions in preference to what you actually tell them verbally.

Children like to explore and take risks in their everyday lives. As a parent and a caregiver, we need to explain when a situation might become unsafe. Obviously, we don’t want to scare the children and need to be mindful of not sharing information with them which is above their level of understanding and knowledge.

As much as we would like, we cannot protect our children from every single danger that is out there. But what we can do, is prepare and equip them with the skills they need to avoid any potentially dangerous situations while also teaching them what to do in case something goes wrong.

It is a sad reality that we are not always safe in South Africa and it is too often that our children and young adults may experience this first-hand. Our annual commemoration of Youth Day observed on the 16 June, should therefore serve as a rallying call for parents and caregivers to re-commit themselves to enhance and ensure the safety of our youth.

Our Occupations Day at school was such a success! It was interesting to observe how many of the children chose to dress up in a profession that provides a protective service to the community!! Thank you to all parents for making such an effort with making this day so special and meaningful for the children. The children had an amazing day portraying their particular profession enthusiastically.

Have a good weekend! Keep warm.

Kind Regards,

Cheryl de Melo.

Confirmation for 2023!

To all those parents who have confirmed admission for 2023, thank you. We really appreciate it.

For those that have not confirmed yet, we urge you to please do as soon as possible so that we may better facilitate our intake numbers for next year. We want to keep the numbers per class small so that the children get all the attention they need and deserve. We also do not want to keep the children that are on our waiting lists too long as they might lose their place in other schools.

Please note that there is NO increase in the school fees for 2023. I have however re-structured the fees. Please use the link on our website or contact me should you wish to have a copy of the restructured fees for 2023

Can I ask that you please drop me an email at admin@bryanstongrade0.co.za if any of your personal details, listed below have changed?
