10th December 2021

Dear Parents and Precious BOFS children of 2021,

I can think of no better way to begin this message than with a heartfelt thank you to the parents and of course our positive and adaptable BOFS learners.

Another year in the books and what a magnificent and also of course the occasional challenging moments. Looking back and reflecting on a very different year I can see that many positives emerged and our school is much stronger for it. The move to our spacious and beautiful new premises in April was a very busy time for the Teachers and staff and we worked most evenings after school and many weekends moving equipment and educational toys that we had accumulated in the past 24 years! A noteworthy and worthwhile positive of it all was that all the staff lost some kilos lugging heavily laden boxes to and from our cars. We also had a tight time frame as all the 2021 learners were only out of school for the BIG move that took place on Friday 9th April and we had to ensure that the school was ready for learning to welcome their children and resume teaching on Monday. The Educators did a sterling job in making their classrooms look inviting and beautiful. Hats off to them for all their long hours of work. Thank you also to all our wonderfully supportive parents that trusted, encouraged, and supported BOFS when we informed you of all of the upcoming relocations to new premises. We could never have done it without your collaboration and alliance with the school.

We are proud of the school atmosphere that we have created within a warm loving environment to challenge our learners and to meet their individual needs. We strive to create a learning climate that encourages learners’ achievement and fosters positive self-esteem in a nurturing non-competitive manner.

It’s often not only what we teach in the classrooms, but also within our personal interactions with learners that we can accomplish the most success with our goals in educating them as a whole.

While our year-end events took a dive and all the fun events planned for the children for the last week of the school year had to, unfortunately, be cancelled I also want to acknowledge that we are continuing to navigate the very real challenges of uncertainty and ambiguity amidst a global pandemic. Both as a parent and school leader, I empathise with the difficulty of setting your child and family up for success given all of the unknowns and ever-changing landscape.

It is my heartfelt privilege to serve as the principal. I sincerely believe that a school environment that is collaborative draws on the strength of all stakeholders (teachers, parents and children) and fosters a positive school climate that makes a difference in the lives of our learners.

Thank you to all the parents for all your unconditional love, support, and involvement over the past year. It has been a great privilege to get to know you all. You have all played a part through your involvement in your child’s education, to help promote their growth and development. The parent/school two–way communication has been particularly active in developing positive parent-teacher relationships in 2021. This has contributed hugely to the academic strength of your children. Thank you for allowing us to be a part of your children’s daily school life.

To have your children at our school has been a privilege specially to watch their personalities grow day by day, and of course to see how they have developed academically.

We are sure it comes as no surprise to hear that as teachers we LOVE our jobs, and there is nothing better than being a teacher. The benefits are endless.

We have the privilege of waking up each day knowing we can make some difference. The joy, laughter, and spring in our step after laughing at a comment innocently made by a child that is so hilarious, but that the children through their innocence don’t realise that he has unintentionally made a joke. Being loved unconditionally by our learners and being told that you look beautiful, no matter how you actually appear. But most of all the secret glow that lights up from within when a child shyly says ‘THANK YOU, TEACHER, FOR EVERYTHING ‘You are all SO INCREDIBLE – It has been wonderful to glimpse the inner growth and development taking place within every one of you; it can be likened to taking snapshots of little miracles happening before our eyes. Always remember to believe you can do it and then you are halfway there! NEVER give up until you are proud of yourself. Your future is filled with potential and the promise of greater things – Reach for the sky and DREAM BIG! You are all SUPERSTARS. Always remember a little spark of kindness can put a colossal burst of sunshine into someone’s day.

We wish all the parents and children leaving us in Grade 0 all the best in Grade One! Please visit us next year! We thank all the parents that have the confidence in and the teachers that are going to remain with us for your child’s foundation in Grades 1,2, and 3.

I know that at this time of the year when many families get to spend some very close and special times on Holiday together that it is a period of great excitement and joy for our children. Relish and feel their elation and enthusiasm of it all!

I hope you enjoy some rest, relaxation, and time away from your screens this summer holiday.  I hope that your long-anticipated December break will be full of adventure, relaxation and laughter with family and friends. Stay safe and relish the moment!

The year has come to an end and so we return your precious children back to you, all a little taller, wiser, and more mature than that first day we received them in January. We as Educators feel that we have brought about some positive change in your child’s life.

Lots of Love to all the BOFS families,

Yours in Education,

Cheryl de Melo.
